On Saturday, 26 February 2016, embraced with a spirit of altruism, a team comprised TAR UC staff and students, paid a visit to multiple NGOs to help the needy and less fortunate. The first visit was Tong Sim Senior Citizen Care Home at Salak Selatan where food and other household items were donated to help alleviate the burden of the senior citizens. Our volunteers brought pleasant companionship to the elderly who are alone and confined to their homes. The second visit was GGM Community Learning Centre in Seri Kembangan, Selangor which caters to the educational needs of the refugee children. A cheque with an amount of RM1,100.00 was handed over to the administrator, Pastor Lee Je Siang who expressed her gratitude and said that the money would be helpful to pay the overdue rental of the centre’s premise.

The next destination was Sincere Care Centre in Kajang which provides shelter for mentally ill women, single mothers with children and teenage girls. A RM6000 cheque was handed over to the Sincere Care Centre to help ease their burden. The team then headed to Rumah Warga emas NACSCOM at the PPR Sri Semarak, Setapak. Irene, the administrator and most of the residents came out to welcome us with open arms. We spent some quality time with the senior citizens and also brought along some food stuff and household items for them. The final destination of the day was to the senior citizen’s home under the Persatuan Kebajikan dan Sosial Kim Loo Ting (KL) in Jalan Ayer Puteh off Jalan Air Panas, Setapak. Another cheque amounting to RM6, 000.00 was given to Mr Tan who received it on behalf of the society that manages the home.

Sammuel Ong Kuo Xian from Diploma in Broadcasting Communication claimed that the visitation was indeed a valuable experience for him as he learned to care and appreciate the isolated senior citizens. He believes that although some of the senior citizens might have cognitive limitation, they still enjoy the companionship of visitors. Wong Yong Hou from Diploma in Accounting felt that this visitation had brightened the day for older adults, and he hopes that such great effort should be maintained and continued in future.
