The Essay Writing Competition 2014 was organised by the Division of English and Foreign Languages from 6 to 23 October 2014 with the aim of getting TAR UC students to showcase their talents in writing. The competition was divided into two categories, i.e. A Level/Foundation/Diploma category and Bachelor’s Degree category. Participants were required to write an essay on the theme of ‘Hope’.
For the A-level/Foundation/Diploma category, Noor Dannial bin Noor Affandy (A Level) won the first prize and walked away with RM220 cash vouchers and books worth RM120. The second prize went to Jason Wong Kam Hon (Foundation in Arts) and he received RM120 cash vouchers and books worth RM90. Frederic Choo Chi Sim, a Diploma in Business Studies (Finance & Investment) Year 1 student, won the third prize with RM60 cash vouchers and books worth RM65.
For the Bachelor’s Degree category, Yeo Chia Hui (Bachelor of Communication (Hons) Journalism Year 2) won the first prize with RM220 cash vouchers and books worth RM120. The second prize went to Choo Weng Wei (Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Year 2) won RM120 cash vouchers and books worth RM90. Keith Gabriel Gan (Bachelor of Business (Hons) Human Resource Management Year 2) won the third prize with RM60 cash vouchers and books worth RM65.
The winners were selected based on the creative use of language, accuracy of content, effective organisation and presentation of essay. According to Ms Cheng Wei Fong, the Co-ordinator of the competition, many entries were received and the judges were impressed with the interesting and creative interpretations of the theme ‘Hope’ by the students who participated in the competition.
