TAR UC Main Campus Public Speaking Competition took place on 28th July, 2016, at the Auditorium, Bangunan Tun Tan Siew Sin. The competition was attended by the President of TAR UC, Yg. Bhg. Datuk Dr. Tan Chik Heok, Vice Presidents and other senior UC officials. The theme for the finals was ‘The world is changed by your example, not by your Opinion’. Two talented student emcees, Choong Wan Li and Shalomi Abenegail a/p David Tangaraj, hosted the competition. They managed to showcase their emceeing skills through their bubbly and cheerful personalities.
All the five contestants went through battles of speeches in the preliminary, qualifying, and semi-final rounds against their peers before they arrived at their final destination – the TAR UC Main Campus Public Speaking Competition 2016 Finals. The first contestant, Lee Jing Rui, a student from Diploma in Broadcast Communication, presented a speech titled ‘Monkey See, Monkey Do’. His speech was followed by another inspirational speech titled ‘Do Something, Don’t Just Sit There’ by Siddhatta Chong Carl Chun, a student from Diploma in Software Technology. The third contestant, Santhini a/p Pagavarsingam (Bachelor of Communication (Honours) in Media Studies) kept the audience entertained by her speech, ‘Lead by Example’. Subsequently, Phang Sing-Yee from Bachelor of Public Relations (Honours) (semester 2), presented on a fascinating story titled ‘Just Do It’. Last but not least, Chong Yew Han, who is in the same programme as Phang Sing-Yee, delivered his motivating speech titled ‘The Two Sides of the Coin’.
The three adjudicators were Ms Melissa Lee Pooi Kuan and Dr Ho U-minh Mahinda, both senior lecturers from the Division of English and Foreign Languages as well as Mr. Eugene Kok Li-Jin, who is an alumni and a member of Toastmaster International.
Siddhatta Chong emerged as the winner of the TAR UC Main Campus Public Speaking Competition 2016, with Phang Sin Yee and Santhini winning the first and second runner-up. Both Chong Yew Han and Lee Jing Rui won the fourth and fifth places respectively. Plaques and gift vouchers were presented to the winners by Datuk Dr. Tan accompanied by the Head of Centre for Nation Building and Languages, Ms. Karthiyani Shanmugam, and Ms. Cheng Wei Fong, Head of Division of English and Foreign Languages.
