Under the theme of ‘You Make a World of Difference’, DBF1 students taking the Civic Consciousness and Volunteerism course were given a task of selling calendars from Shelter Home for Children from Week 5 to Week 9, Semester 2 2016/2017. Each tutorial group was given 60 calendars to be sold within 5 weeks. The theme of the Shelter Home calendars is ‘Child’s Rights’. All proceeds from the sale of calendars will go to the Shelter Home for Children located in Jalan Barat, Petaling Jaya.
All the paintings and artwork featured in the calendar were done by the Shelter Home children. The drawings in the calendar illustrate the universal rights of children. Children are the future leaders and when they are treated with utmost respect, they will be able to develop various skills and abilities, and make a difference to the world we live in.
This project aims to develop the students’ ability to commit to a fundraising project despite the many challenges they may encounter in selling the charity calendars which were priced at RM10 per copy. The students remained enthusiastic about the task at hand. Their enthusiasm was seen as some groups were able to sell the calendars allocated to them very quickly. One of the students, Lim Jing Sian asserted that many buyers purchased the calendars without hesitation as soon as they were told that the proceeds would go to a charitable cause.
Being Business and Finance students, the students managed to apply their marketing knowledge in selling the calendars as quickly as possible. Social media was used to market the calendars and promote Shelter Home for Children. Due to the fact that many students possess smart phones with a built in calendar application, our students had to be tactful in convincing buyers that a desk calendar can come in handy especially when they want to know the public holidays, school holidays as well as the “Chinese Lunar Dates”. The Shelter Home continues to be committed to causes such as rescuing children who are victims of sexual violence. Our students, through the sale of the calendars, have contributed in supporting Shelter Home for Children to achieve its mission and goals.
